Tougher speeding laws are on the way in 2017

Break Clauses

New sentencing guidelines for magistrates will mean higher penalties for drivers who commit the most serious speeding offences.
Fines will start from 150% of their weekly income for motorists caught travelling above the speed limit. This a significant increase from the previous level of 100% of their weekly earnings.
The new speeding fine rules will come into play from April 24th 2017 onward. Current guidelines mean the most serious speeding offences will land culprits with a fine capped at £1,000, however this rises to £2,500 if the offence is committed on a motorway. It means, for example, someone who is sentenced for driving at 101mph or faster in a 70mph zone will now be dealt with in a more severe bracket.
The current minimum fine of £100 and three points will still remain according to www.gov.uk. Law abiding citizens with a clean licence may still be able to circumvent the points hit by attending a speed awareness course. Previous speeders will not be extended such opportunities seeing their points total climb further.
The Sentencing Council said the move aims to ensure there is a ‘clear increase in penalty as the seriousness of offending increases’.
It follows responses to a consultation arguing previous guidelines did not properly take into account the increase in potential harm that can result as speed above the limit rises.
Speeding is one of a number of areas covered in new sentencing guidelines for magistrates’ courts in England and Wales.
