Dementia
Our Dementia Choir with Vicky McClure recently screened on the BBC has certainly taken us on a journey in terms of learning about dementia and living with it because to date there is no cure.
The idea is that by learning more about dementia, people can feel more empowered to seek the help they require, either for themselves or a loved one. It will also assist in challenging the stigma that surrounds this disease.
There are currently 850,000 people in the UK who live with a form of dementia and dementia is now widely recognised as one of the most significant health issues of the 21st century.
What are the most common symptoms of dementia?
It is important to note that there are many types of dementia and everyone is affected differently, especially at the onset.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, which according to Dementia UK represents around 60% of diagnosis’, and here are just some of the symptoms to look out for:-
- Concentration – difficulties making decisions or carrying out a sequence of tasks;
- Memory loss – difficulties recalling events or forgetting what you are doing;
- Conversation – difficulties following a discussion or struggling to find the right word;
- Orientation – losing track of time or being unsure of what day it is;
- Changes in mood – irritability, anxious, withdrawn
Living with dementia
A person with living dementia can lead a ‘normal life’ for many years, however as the disease progresses this will become more difficult and it is important to have measures in place so matters can be managed with ease.
